During the Edo period, a festival for Tosho-gu Shrine was held on September 17. This has come to be known as the “Sendai Matsuri.” Tosho-gu Shrine was built on April 17, 1654 in the days of the second Sendai clan leader, Date Tadamune, Sendai Matsuri started on that day the following next year. Because of Sankinkoutai ( a kind of the feudal system of Clan leaders’ alternate-year attendance at Edo), it was held every other year, when the leader was staying in Sendai.

Sendai Aoba Festival is held to tell the arrival of early summer at Sendai, “Sendai Sparrow Dance” will be held in areas around the city, and “Town of Mori” where you can taste local ingredients and cuisine, there is a street of the Edo period where you can enjoy eating, while seeing the festivals, such as the reproduced “Date Edge”. Sendai Sparrow dance is a dance that is said to have danced improvised by drunken masons at the banquet during the construction of Sendai Castle and it’s that the dance was similar to the appearance of the sparrow and that the crest of the Date clan was named because of the dance.  Also in the evening of the 20th, the Yamaboko lighting of the lantern will go around the town area. During this festival, 11 shrines will be transferred and warriors queuing and 11 gorgeous, luxurious mountain pavilions, and about 2000 Sendai Sparrow dancers’ take scrolls that are carried over.
